Two tries, then a dislocated shoulder: Savea is out of the decider

For half an hour at FNB Stadium, Ardie Savea was playing one of his great Tests. He picked up off Asafo Aumua's lineout carry to score in the 9th minute, then arrived on Leroy Carter's shoulder to finish a sweeping wide attack in the 25th. Four minutes later he was walking off, and now he is out of the tour.

The moment itself was almost invisible in real time. At a breakdown in the 30th minute, the official All Blacks match report records, Savea took Malcolm Marx's head flush on the shoulder. He wanted to play on, the NZ Herald reported, but was clearly in intense pain, and Wallace Sititi came on for him. The All Blacks later confirmed the diagnosis: a dislocated shoulder, his right.

Head coach Dave Rennie did not have that confirmation when he first fronted after the 29-24 defeat, which put South Africa 2-1 up in the four-Test series.

"Yes, it's his shoulder. I'm certainly not sure whether it's dislocated or not, but he certainly won't be travelling to the States," Rennie said.

That last part is the hard news. The series decider is at the home of the NFL's Baltimore Ravens next Saturday (Sunday NZT), the finale of the "Rugby's Greatest Rivalry" tour, and the All Blacks will be there without their captain. They are not calling in a squad replacement. Luke Jacobson, who took over the on-field captaincy when Savea left, is out of the decider too with an elbow tendon injury, so the armband question is open. Patrick Tuipulotu, who has led the midweek tour sides, Codie Taylor and Jordie Barrett have all been floated.

Rennie was not reaching for the injury as an explanation for the result. "He was massive, wasn't he? But, you know, Wallace came on and played well, so we're certainly not going to use that as an excuse," he said.

How long is he out?

Nobody has said, and it is worth being precise about what is and is not known. There are no public scan results, no grade on the dislocation, and no word on whether surgery is needed. The only timeline anyone has put on it is an opinion, and its owner labelled it as one.

"I'm no doctor, but I would be surprised if he played again this year," former All Blacks prop Angus Ta'avao told the NZ Herald. "It looked to me like it was a shoulder dislocation and I think probably moving forward the best thing would be to get him right for what's coming in the future."

If Ta'avao is right, the cost is the All Blacks' entire November: the Nations Championship northern leg against Scotland in Edinburgh (8 November NZT), Wales in Cardiff (15 November) and England in London (22 November), plus the Finals Weekend at Allianz Stadium at the end of the month. None of that is official. Until the All Blacks release a timeframe, those Tests are at risk, not ruled out.

Ta'avao also offered the long view. "He's had a big run of rugby, he missed the start of this series to get a bit of a rest, but he gives everything, his body, his mind, his soul, his spirit, and it's probably an opportunity for him to step away and get some family time and refresh and recoup building towards a big 2027."

The stakes around him

Savea, 32, has been the centrepiece of Rennie's first season. Named captain in July when the new coach took over, succeeding the injured Scott Barrett, he came into the series off a Japan sabbatical with Kobe and was deliberately rested from the tour's three provincial warm-ups. He has repaid that management with tries in both the Cape Town Test and this one, three for the series. Beyond November sits the part everyone in South Auckland cares about: he is signed to return to Moana Pasifika for Super Rugby 2027, a World Cup year. Nothing that has been made public connects this injury to any of that yet, and it would be guesswork to try.

The Springboks board their own flight to Baltimore with a matching hole. Cheslin Kolbe broke his jaw in the 9th minute of the same match and is out of the decider, with Ben-Jason Dixon also staying behind under concussion protocols. A brutal series has now taken a marquee player from each side.

Savea himself had said nothing publicly by Sunday evening. The next word that matters will be medical: scan results and a recovery window, probably alongside the naming of a Baltimore captain early this week.
