Ten tries and three debutants: Black Ferns 66, Wallaroos 19

Whitney Hansen had been asking her side for one word all season. She got it on Saturday.

Black Ferns 66, Wallaroos 19 at Go Media Stadium, ten tries to three, and the Laurie O'Reilly Cup series swept two-nil after April's 40-5 win on the Sunshine Coast.

The scoreline is not the point. The eighty minutes is.

"I'm glad that you used that word," Hansen said when someone said ruthless. "Because that's one of the things we've been searching for. We're pretty proud of the fact that it wasn't just a 40 minute effort, it was 80."

The rout

26-7 up at the break and then it kept coming. Braxton Sorensen-McGee scored inside five minutes and finished with 21 points, a try and eight conversions from a possible ten.

Ten different scorers: Sorensen-McGee, Chryss Viliko, Ruahei Demant, Liana Mikaele-Tu'u, Maiakawanakaulani Roos, Ayesha Leti-I'iga, Vici-Rose Green, Maia Joseph, Shyrah Tuliau-Tua'a and Amarante Sititi.

66 points, one short of the Black Ferns' O'Reilly Cup record of 67.

In the engine room, Kaipo Olsen-Baker made 16 carries, two line breaks and 15 tackles. Amy du Plessis made 79 metres, more than anyone on the field.

The three new ones

All three debutants delivered, which is not how debuts usually go.

Elinor-Plum King started at openside and made 16 tackles with two turnovers. That is a shift. Amarante Sititi and Shyrah Tuliau-Tua'a both scored, Tuliau-Tua'a by charging down a clearance in goal.

Hansen's verdict was short and generous: "None of them let us down today."

All three had pushed their case in the internal match at Upper Hutt eight days earlier, where King scored a hat-trick.

Two things worth noting from the other side

This was the Wallaroos' 100th Test, and two moments in it deserve recording.

Maddison Levi, Australia's all-time leading sevens try-scorer, made her debut off the bench and won two turnovers in thirty minutes.

And Pia Tapsell became the first woman to play Test rugby for both nations. Six Tests for the Black Ferns in 2019 and 2020, then a move to the Western Force in 2025, and now Australia. That is a genuine first.

Desiree Miller, Brittany Merlo and 18-year-old debutant Waiaria Ellis scored Australia's tries.

An honest note on the streak

You will see a number attached to this. Some outlets say 30 straight wins over Australia, some say 31, one says 32. They cannot all be right and we are not going to pick one.

What is not in dispute: Australia have never beaten the Black Ferns since the two sides first met in 1994.

Where they go now

Ruahei Demant was not letting anyone settle: "There's lots of things that still need to be better. Our next chance to do that will be South Africa."

She means it literally. The squad flies out on Friday and does not come home until October. First up is history: Saturday 5 September in Johannesburg, the first Black Ferns Test ever played on South African soil, as the curtain-raiser to the third All Blacks Test at FNB Stadium.

Then France in Lyon, Scotland in Edinburgh and England at Twickenham, before three home Tests against France in October, one of them at Semenoff Stadium in Whangārei.

Eleven Tests in a season. Hansen is four from four.
