Canterbury eye redemption as the 2026 Farah Palmer Cup nears

Few teams will begin the 2026 Farah Palmer Cup with more motivation than Canterbury, and few have a stronger recent record of going deep in the competition.

Last season ended in heartbreak by the finest of margins. As RNZ reported, Canterbury led the charge in the closing seconds of the 2025 Premiership final only for Waikato fullback Kaea Nepia to produce a match-saving cover tackle on Fia Laikong, forcing the ball into touch and sealing a 19-13 win for the hosts. Tries to Winnie Palamo and Louise Blyde had kept Canterbury in the contest right to the death at FMG Stadium.

Even in defeat, the belief within the group was clear. Canterbury captain Holly Greenway told RNZ: "The growth of this team to come, we are going to be pretty unstoppable." That optimism is well founded for a province that has been a mainstay of Farah Palmer Cup finals in recent years.

The pathway feeding this team continues to thrive. Canterbury FPC and Matatū leader Grace Brooker, quoted by Canterbury Rugby, was struck by the turnout at a recent girls development camp, saying: "They were amazing, it blew my mind away at how many girls there were!" It all points to a healthy production line of talent coming through in the region.

2026 brings a new-look competition. As NZ Rugby confirmed, the tournament moves to 12 teams in two pools of six, with Premiership and Championship honours up for grabs and both pools reset for balance. The season schedule has the campaign starting on 29 August 2026, with many matches staged as double-headers alongside National Provincial Championship fixtures.

Canterbury will not have to wait long for a marquee occasion. Canterbury Rugby has flagged a Round 1 meeting with Auckland at One NZ Stadium in Christchurch, a mouth-watering opener between two of the competition's traditional heavyweights.

With a hungry squad, a proud finals pedigree and a home crowd behind them, Canterbury look primed to challenge again in 2026. After coming within a whisker last year, this group has every reason to believe their moment is not far away.
