Dom Gardiner: Super Rugby champion in 2023 and the turnover that won the Ranfurly Shield in 2026
The son of original Crusader Angus Gardiner came off the bench in the 2023 Super Rugby final, sealed Canterbury's Ranfurly Shield win in Dunedin with a last-minute turnover in August 2026 and scored the first try of the 2026 NPC final.
Thursday, 5 November 2026

It was the last minute in Dunedin on 9 August 2026. Canterbury led Otago 19-15, and the holders had the ball and one last chance to keep the Ranfurly Shield. Then a Canterbury loose forward saw the Otago replacement hooker Nic Souchon a fraction isolated at the breakdown, got his hands on the ball and ripped it away. Canterbury kept possession until the referee blew time, and took the Shield for a record 18th time. Dom Gardiner, the son of an original Crusader, had made 23 tackles that afternoon without missing one. It was one more big moment in a career that already held a winning Super Rugby final and an NPC title, and he would add a try in another NPC final before the year was out.
Where he comes from
Gardiner was born on 12 July 2001, according to his Crusaders profile, which lists him at 191 centimetres. Rugby runs straight through the family. His father, Angus Gardiner, was a flanker in the very first Crusaders team in 1996 and is Crusader number 7. He was part of the club's first two Super Rugby titles, in 1998 and 1999, and played 69 games for Canterbury, scoring 22 tries and winning the 1997 NPC title, RugbyPass has recorded. On 3 September 1994 he was the openside when Canterbury beat Waikato 29-26 in Hamilton to win the Ranfurly Shield. Since 2016 he has been the Crusaders' general manager of rugby.
Dom grew up at the Marist Albion club in Christchurch, where his father had played and coached. Marist Albion was "the same club as Dad coached and played at," he told the Crusaders website in November 2025, and when people said he played like his father, "it was always a compliment."
St Bede's College
At St Bede's College in Christchurch, Gardiner was an all-rounder: his Crusaders profile records First XI cricket and hockey as well as rugby. He was the school's head prefect in 2019 and captained the First XV that year, a side that won 16 of its 19 games, according to RugbyPass.
In September 2019 he was named in the 25-man New Zealand Secondary Schools team coached by Mark Hammett. The Otago Daily Times listed him among seven Canterbury players selected, describing him as the St Bede's loose forward and the son of the former Canterbury and Crusaders flanker. The squad was to play a game of three halves in Palmerston North and then meet Fiji Schools and Australia Under 18 in Hamilton. Several of his team-mates went on to Super Rugby and beyond, among them Ruben Love, Anton Segner, Corey Kellow, Zach Gallagher and Jack Sexton.
Age grade and Canterbury
In 2021 Gardiner played for the Crusaders Under 20 side and was part of the New Zealand Under 20 squad, as the Crusaders noted when he re-signed. He made his debut for Canterbury the same year: his career figures on Wikipedia and RugbyPass point to one appearance in the 2021 NPC.
The 2022 NPC was his breakthrough season with the province: 13 games and two tries, the first in a 52-20 win over Tasman in Blenheim on 26 August 2022 and the second in a 38-20 win over Auckland in Christchurch on 23 September 2022. He started the final at lock on 22 October 2022 in Christchurch, though Wellington won it 26-18.
In 2023 he played five games and scored twice more, in a 28-24 win over North Harbour at Takapuna on 13 August 2023 and in a 37-35 loss to Waikato in Hamilton on 30 September 2023. In 2024 he played five more, including a start at lock against Hawke's Bay in Christchurch on 28 August 2024.
The Crusaders and a title
The Crusaders named him in their squad for 2022. His Super Rugby debut came on 4 March 2022 against Moana Pasifika in Dunedin, a 33-12 win, and he played six games that season as the Crusaders won the title under Scott Robertson. He became Crusader number 261.
That November he toured with the All Blacks XV and started both of their matches at blindside flanker. The first, on 4 November 2022 against Ireland A at the RDS Arena in Dublin, was the first match ever played under the All Blacks XV name, and they won it 47-19. The second, on 13 November 2022 against the Barbarians at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, the Barbarians won 35-31.
His second Super Rugby season brought his first tries and his first final. On 31 March 2023 against the Reds in Brisbane, the 19-year-old halfback Noah Hotham dummied, broke and gave him the pass for his first Super Rugby try in a 25-15 win. A week later, on 7 April 2023 against Moana Pasifika in Christchurch, he finished a move started by a Richie Mo'unga chip and a Macca Springer offload to make it two tries in two games, and the Crusaders won 38-21.
The Crusaders used 48 players that season because of injuries, and Gardiner's minutes more than tripled. On 24 June 2023 at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton, in front of 25,000, he came off the bench in the 57th minute of the final against the Chiefs. The Crusaders won 25-20 for their 12th Super Rugby title, and RugbyPass counted eight tackles in his 24 minutes.
He played ten games in 2024 and in October that year signed through to the end of 2027. "I continue to live my dream at the Crusaders," he said, and coach Rob Penney called him "a very important piece of the future at the Crusaders."
Missing a season, then the Shield
The whole of the 2025 Super Rugby season went by without him: the Crusaders' injury list showed a hamstring injury in February and a foot problem by April, and RugbyPass later reported a hamstring tear followed by a stress fracture in his foot.
He came back for Canterbury and played ten games in the 2025 NPC. On 6 September 2025 he scored in a 54-14 win over Southland in Invercargill that took the Ranfurly Shield; Otago won it off Canterbury 38-36 two weeks later. Gardiner started at No. 8 in the 43-19 semi-final win over Hawke's Bay on 18 October 2025 and again in the final on 25 October 2025 in Christchurch, when Canterbury beat Otago 36-28 for their 15th NPC title.
Back in red and black
He started the first four Super Rugby games of 2026 at blindside, including the 43-33 comeback win over the Chiefs in Hamilton on 28 February 2026, when the Crusaders' report singled him out for a turnover. An ankle and knee injury in March cost him several weeks, and the club called it a real blow "given the form he's been building."
He was back for the night the Crusaders opened their new home. On 24 April 2026 they beat the Waratahs 35-20 in the first game at One NZ Stadium in Christchurch, and RugbyPass reported that Gardiner led the team in carries, metres, tackles and turnovers. The Crusaders' own report called one play "the moment of the night": Taha Kemara's cross-kick to Gardiner, who burst through and offloaded for Dallas McLeod's second try.
His one try of the season came on 1 May 2026 against the Hurricanes in Wellington. Trailing 38-24 late on, the Crusaders worked the ball through phases until Gardiner charged onto a short ball and forced his way over. Rivez Reihana converted, and the 38-31 loss came with a bonus point. He played 14 games in 2026, eight of them as a starter, and the Crusaders' season ended in the semi-final against the Chiefs in Hamilton on 12 June 2026.
The 2026 NPC
Canterbury's season was the first NPC campaign at One NZ Stadium, and Gardiner scored in the opening game there, a 38-31 win over Auckland on 1 August 2026. Eight days later came the turnover in Dunedin. When Canterbury had no hooker available for a spell of that game, RugbyPass reported, it was Gardiner who threw the ball into the lineout.
He hardly left the field for the rest of the season. He scored in a 22-12 win over Manawatū in Palmerston North on 3 October 2026 and again in the 62-26 quarter-final win over Waikato in Christchurch on 11 October 2026. In the final against Northland at One NZ Stadium on 26 October 2026 he scored the first try of the match in the sixth minute, and Canterbury went on to win 43-24 and retain the title.
RugbyPass's figures have him on the field for 961 minutes across 13 games, the most of any player in the 2026 NPC according to RUGBE's season rankings, with four tries.
Off the field
His Crusaders profile says he has finished a commerce degree at the University of Canterbury and likes to play golf in the off-season.
Where he is now
Gardiner has not played a Test for any country.
The Crusaders named him in their 2027 squad on 28 October 2026, one of eight loose forwards with Ethan Blackadder, Christian Lio-Willie, Xavier Saifoloi, the new signing Finn McLeod, and Xavier Treacy, Oli Mathis and Johnny Lee. He is contracted to the club through 2027, the season Scott Hansen takes over as head coach.
