On 24 August 2024, in only his third game for Canterbury and his first start at first five-eighth, a 20-year-old from Christchurch Boys' High School kicked five penalties at Eden Park. Canterbury beat Auckland 27-21, he finished with 17 points, and the Crusaders later recorded that he had become the youngest Canterbury player to kick five or more penalties in an NPC game. James White has since kicked seven conversions in a Ranfurly Shield win, earned a full Crusaders contract and played his first Super Rugby games, and he is one of three first fives in the Crusaders squad for 2027, alongside Richie Mo'unga and Rivez Reihana.

Where he comes from

White was born on 16 September 2003, according to his Crusaders profile, which lists him at 182 centimetres. He went to Christchurch Boys' High School, and in 2021 he was in the school's First XV leadership group and in the Crusaders Juniors XV.

His club is the University of Canterbury. In May 2025 the Star News described him as the University side's captain and first five, in a season in which they beat Lincoln University 52-17 to win back the trophy the two varsity clubs play for.

The Crusaders pathway

The Crusaders profile traces his rise through their academy. In 2022, aged 18, he made the Crusaders Under 20 team. In February 2023 he was named in their 53-player Under 20 extended squad, coached by Alex Robertson, and he made the Under 20 side again that year, as well as the Canterbury B squad.

Canterbury

When Canterbury named their 2024 NPC squad, his old school noted that he was in line for his debut. It came off the bench on 10 August 2024 against Northland in Christchurch, a 34-21 win in which he kicked a conversion. Two weeks later he started at Eden Park, and the five penalties and a conversion followed.

He kept the No. 10 jersey for most of the season. On 28 August 2024 against Hawke's Bay in Christchurch he kicked a conversion and three penalties in a 27-21 defeat. On 1 September 2024 against Wellington at Rangiora he played fullback, scored his first NPC try early in the second half and converted three tries, though Wellington won 46-21. He kicked goals in wins over Otago in Dunedin on 7 September 2024 and Counties Manukau in Christchurch on 21 September 2024. His first NPC season brought 49 points in seven games, a total the Crusaders also noted on his profile.

In 2025 he spent the Super Rugby season in the Crusaders' wider training group. He started at first five in Canterbury's first three NPC games, wins over Wellington in Porirua on 2 August 2025, Auckland in Christchurch on 9 August 2025 and Bay of Plenty in Tauranga on 16 August 2025. On 6 September 2025 at Rugby Park in Invercargill, Canterbury beat Southland 54-14 to win the Ranfurly Shield, and White converted seven of their eight tries. He also kicked goals in the Shield defence against Tasman on 14 September 2025, a 31-25 win, and in the 38-36 loss to Otago on 20 September 2025, when the Shield went south. He finished the NPC with seven games and 36 points, and came off the bench in the quarter-final win over Counties Manukau on 12 October 2025. Canterbury went on to win the title, though White was not in the 23 for the final.

A first Super Rugby contract

On 6 November 2025 the Crusaders named their 2026 squad, and White was one of six young players to earn a first full Super Rugby contract. The club noted that he, Louie Chapman and Manumaua Letiu were all products of Christchurch Boys' High School who had proven themselves in the wider training squad in 2025.

The Crusaders started him at fullback in the first pre-season game against the Highlanders in Timaru on 30 January 2026, which they won 33-10, saying fans would be excited to see him there after "a stellar NPC season with Canterbury."

Crusader number 301

White was not in the 23 first named for the Round 2 game against the Brumbies, but on the day he was on the bench, wearing No. 22. On 22 February 2026 in Christchurch he came on in the 74th minute to make his Super Rugby debut, and became Crusader number 301. The Brumbies won 50-24, their first win in Christchurch in more than 25 years, as the Crusaders' own report put it.

A week later, on 28 February 2026, he was on the bench again for the trip to Hamilton. The Crusaders came back from 14-0 down to lead the Chiefs 41-21 when White came on in the 67th minute, and they held on to win 43-33.

That was the end of his Super Rugby season. On 11 March 2026 the club announced that he had been ruled out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury that needed surgery. "He's such a big part of our future," the Crusaders said.

Back for Canterbury

White was back in the red and black by September. He started at first five on 12 September 2026 against Wellington at One NZ Stadium and kicked five conversions in a 66-19 win. He started again in the 25-24 win over North Harbour at Albany on 20 September 2026, and kicked a conversion in a 34-21 win over Southland in Christchurch on 26 September 2026. He played four NPC games in 2026 for 12 points. Canterbury went on to retain the title, beating Northland 43-24 in the final on 26 October 2026; White was not in the matchday 23 for the final.

Where he is now

White has not played a Test for any country.

On 28 October 2026 the Crusaders named him as one of three first five-eighths for 2027, with Rivez Reihana and the returning Richie Mo'unga. Scott Hansen takes over from Rob Penney as head coach.
