'It feels like Christmas Day': Christchurch Boys' keep the college match at school over new stadium

Some things matter more than a big stage. Offered the chance to shift their famous college match against Christ's College to Christchurch's brand-new One NZ Stadium Te Kaha, Christchurch Boys' High School said thanks, but the old fixture belongs at school.

NZ Herald senior journalist Mike Thorpe reported that the annual clash, first played in 1892, went ahead on the school's Number One Field on 1 June rather than under the roof of the city's $683 million stadium. The decision came straight from the players. "The feedback from the boys was, overwhelmingly, that the college match belongs at school or college," headmaster Nic Hill told the Herald. One Year 12 student summed up what the day means to the school community, telling Thorpe the match "feels like Christmas Day".

Hill also spoke warmly about what the occasion teaches. "One of the important things about the college match is that the boys... care deeply about it. Learning to handle that emotion with pride and self-control is part of the experience," he said.

The hosts went into the day in sparkling form. Thorpe reported Christchurch Boys' were unbeaten in 2026 across both the Miles Toyota Premiership and the new 11-team South Island Boys' competition, with wins over St Thomas of Canterbury College, Nelson College and Otago Boys' High School, a tight away victory over Southland Boys' High School, and a thrilling 29-29 home draw with St Andrew's College. Rugby Xplorer's match centre shows the Invercargill trip was won 28-22, while the round-four fixture in Nelson saw first five William Brown land seven conversions and two penalties in a 55-24 win.

The defending Miles Toyota champions are led by third-year openside flanker Jonty Leary, and Canterbury Rugby's season launch noted the school will field 21 rugby teams across the grades in 2026, a remarkable statement of the game's health at the school named School of the Year in 2025. "The Miles Toyota First XV Premiership is the pinnacle of schoolboy rugby in our region. It's where passion, pride, and potential all come together," Canterbury Rugby's Michael Sheat said at the launch.

There is plenty of talent on both sides of this rivalry, too, the Herald noted Christ's College centre Hoani-Manuera Kahukiwa has already bagged two hat-tricks this season. And as one Herald reader gently reminded everyone, this is no grudge match: it is a friendly rivalry built on more than a century of mutual respect.
