Hamilton Girls' High stack the national U18 squad and eye the final again

How do you measure a school rugby programme that is genuinely humming? One good answer is how many of its players the national selectors come calling for, and by that measure Hamilton Girls' High School is having a season to remember.

Five of the school's First XV were named in the New Zealand U18 Girls' Pathways Squad, announced by NZ Rugby on 26 June 2026. Hooker Jess Hayward, loose forward Ashlee Marra, first-five Kaydence Benjamin and outside backs Koiatarau Edwards and Libby Kearins-Te Whare all earned a place in the North squad.

That is a serious slice of representation for one school in a national group. When five of your teammates are in the same national pathway conversation, it says a lot about the culture being built in Hamilton.

NZ Rugby reports the squad gathered for a six-day high-performance camp in Hamilton from 5 to 10 July, on home turf for the Waikato contingent. The camp built toward a North versus South fixture at St Peter's School in Cambridge on 9 July, with the match livestreamed from midday.

The pathway is more than a nice line on a CV. NZ Rugby notes that six players from last year's U18 camp went on to be contracted by Super Rugby Aupiki clubs for 2026, so the players wearing that squad kit are stepping onto a genuine road toward the professional game.

Of course, Hamilton Girls' High arrived at this moment with unfinished business. In 2025 they reached the Hine Pounamu national final, where the NZ Herald reported they went down 20-17 to a Manukura side that did not lead until the final act of the match.

It was as close as a final gets. According to the NZ Herald, blindside Ashlee Marra busted through for a try and first-five Kaydence Benjamin added the conversion, two of the same names now carrying that experience into the national squad.

There is something powerful about a team that loses a final by three points and comes back hungrier. The players who felt that final whistle in 2025 are the ones now testing themselves at national level, and they will know exactly how fine the margins are at the top.

So the question for the season ahead almost writes itself. With five players sharpened by a national camp and the memory of a final that slipped away by a single score, can Hamilton Girls' High go one better in 2026?
