Kelston Boys' High First XV 2026: West Auckland's proud powerhouse rolls on

Few names carry as much weight in New Zealand schoolboy rugby as Kelston Boys' High School. The West Auckland school is one of the great Pasifika rugby nurseries, a programme that has sent a long line of players on to All Blacks jerseys and professional careers. In 2026 the red-and-black are back in the thick of a fierce Auckland 1A competition, and the early signs have been encouraging.

A strong start to the campaign

Kelston opened their 2026 Auckland 1A season with a hard-fought 25-18 win over Sacred Heart College, a result the NZ Herald reported saw them "claim 1A first-round honours". The Herald noted the win featured four tries and was built on plenty of youth, with five players making their 1A debut. Fullback Jeremiah Toleafoa crossed twice and No. 8 Nikau Wright opened the scoring, per the same report.

From there the scoreboard started to tick over in a big way. Auckland Rugby's match centre records a 62-3 Round 3 win over St Paul's College, followed by a commanding 113-7 result against Botany Downs in Round 6. Those are the kinds of performances that show a squad growing in confidence and combination as the season rolls on.

A heritage second to none

What sets Kelston apart is history. The school is the most decorated club in Auckland 1A, with a long roll of titles stretching back to 1977. According to Wikipedia's Auckland 1A record, Kelston are 14-time champions, most recently lifting the trophy in 2024 when, as the NZ Herald reported, they beat St Kentigern College 32-24 in a classic final at Eden Park after losing four round-robin games along the way. "These boys have worked so hard and shown such heart," one supporter told the Herald that day.

The school's reach goes well beyond Auckland, too. Stuff reported the Kelston First XV winning a World Schools Rugby Festival final in Abu Dhabi, a reminder of how far this programme's reputation travels.

Where things stand, and what's ahead

Auckland 1A is widely regarded as one of the toughest school competitions in the country, with King's College, St Kentigern, Sacred Heart, Auckland Grammar and more all chasing honours every week. Kelston sit right in that mix, and the round-robin still has plenty to play for. Auckland Rugby's draw has Kelston hosting Liston College on 25 July as the competition heads towards its business end.

Whatever the coming weeks bring, Kelston's 2026 season so far has plenty for the West Auckland community to enjoy: youngsters stepping up, big team performances, and a proud jersey worn with the same heart it always has been.
