Ten thousand at Eden Park for a school game: Kelston Boys' High win the Auckland 1A final

About ten thousand people went to Eden Park on Saturday to watch a school rugby match.

Read that again. Not a Test. Not an NPC game. A 1st XV final, between two Auckland schools, and ten thousand people came.

Kelston Boys' High School 27, Auckland Grammar 15.

They had to come back to do it

Grammar led 15-10 at halftime, and they had every reason to believe. A fortnight earlier, in the round robin, the same two teams met and Grammar won 36-28. Eight points. Kelston had already been beaten by these opponents once this season.

Then Kelston came out for the second half and scored 17 points without reply. Grammar did not add a thing after the break.

A forty-minute shutout in a final, against a team that had your measure two weeks ago, is a serious piece of schoolboy rugby.

Four titles in six years

This is Kelston's fourth Auckland 1A title in six seasons. West Auckland has quietly become the address for the best schoolboy rugby in the country's biggest city, and this is what a programme looks like when it is properly built rather than briefly lucky.

Auckland Grammar will be hurting, and they should be proud. They won the round-robin meeting, they made the final, and they led it at halftime at Eden Park. There is no shame anywhere in that.

The crowd is the story

We will say it again, because it deserves saying: ten thousand people.

That is more than most Farah Palmer Cup matches draw. More than plenty of NPC games. For a school final, played by teenagers, most of whom will never be paid to play rugby.

They came because their sons go there, or their nephews, or because they went there thirty years ago, or because their neighbour's kid is on the wing. That is what school rugby is, and on Saturday afternoon in Auckland it filled a good chunk of Eden Park.
