King's College First XV in 2026: a young side building character in a brutal Auckland 1A

Every title-winning team eventually has to rebuild, and 2026 has been that kind of season for King's College. The Auckland side went into the year as reigning Auckland 1A champions after claiming the competition in 2025, but with a much-changed squad they have spent this campaign blooding new talent in one of the most demanding schoolboy competitions anywhere in New Zealand.

Just how new is this group? In the season opener alone, King's own match report noted that 19 players made their 1A debuts as the side beat Liston College 38-14 on 2 May. Head coach Ian Robinson credited composure once the nerves settled: "It was a tight first half, but we talked about staying in it and sticking to our processes," he told the school's channel, with Josiah Fifita, Kavelle Wiki-Rawiri, Tee Marsh, Ruka Smythe, Jack Burns and James Shaw all crossing the line.

Highs, lows and plenty of learning

Auckland 1A rarely lets a young team settle, and King's have felt both edges of it. Against a powerful Sacred Heart College, the boys went toe to toe early and were level 15-15 at halftime before their opponents pulled clear, per King's match wrap and Auckland Rugby's match centre. That afternoon still had a bright note, with Karson Hawkins earning a First XV debut.

The standout for character, though, came against De La Salle College on 6 July. Down 12-0 early, King's fought back to win 22-17, with Ruka Smythe grabbing the match-winner in the final moments and Sam Coulter and Josiah Fifita earning their caps. "I'm immensely proud of the boys. It's been a season of hardship, but we saw amazing effort today," Robinson said. "To step up and deliver a result in a tough place to play... it's all the boys' result."

The Grammar derby and the run home

No King's season is complete without the derby, and the 215th meeting with Auckland Grammar for the Cooper-Greenbank Cup was another chapter in that famous rivalry (RUGBE covered that clash in full here). Grammar took the honours on the day.

Even so, results across the round robin have kept King's near the top of a tightly packed table, sitting among the leading pack alongside St Kentigern and Sacred Heart heading into the business end of the season. For a team leaning on so many first-year 1A players, staying in the hunt is no small thing, and the playoffs promise more big occasions ahead.
