The All Blacks are playing this week's Test against Scotland in mourning. Logan Cadwallader, the team's head of security for the past ten years, died on Sunday 1 November after a medical event at the team hotel in Edinburgh, two days after the squad arrived for their northern tour. New Zealand Rugby announced his death on Tuesday morning New Zealand time.

He is survived by his wife, Nannette, and their children Trey, Brooke and Mia. New Zealand Rugby has asked that the family's privacy be respected.

The man behind the team

Most supporters would not have known his name, which is how he would have wanted it. Cadwallader travelled everywhere with the All Blacks for a decade, the person responsible for keeping players, coaches and staff safe in hotels, airports and stadiums around the world.

Before that he was a soldier. He served in the New Zealand Army and the New Zealand Special Air Service, with deployments to Bosnia, East Timor, Afghanistan and the Solomon Islands, and went into the security business after leaving the army.

He was also a rugby man in his own right. He played for the North Shore Rugby Football Club in Devonport, which remembered him as a proud North Shore man and a championship-winning player. His son Trey has captained the club's under-85kg side.

"Our quiet hero"

Head coach Dave Rennie said the whole team was devastated. "He was the ultimate team man, loved and trusted by all," Rennie said in New Zealand Rugby's statement.

Forwards coach Jason Ryan, who has worked alongside him since 2022, wiped away tears as he spoke to New Zealand reporters by video call. "I can tell you that the team is heartbroken," Ryan said. "Loges was our quiet hero." He added that the country had lost a great soldier. Reporters were asked to move on to rugby once he had finished, and did.

Attack coach Mike Blair, who joined the team this year, told Scottish media it had been a huge shock that was taking time to deal with.

New Zealand Rugby chief executive Steve Lancaster said Cadwallader would be greatly missed by everyone who worked alongside him, and that the organisation was supporting his family, the players and the staff.

Injured captain Ardie Savea called him "my brother" in a social media post. Players described him to 1News as kind-hearted and an all-round good bloke. National MP Mark Mitchell, a friend, shared a photograph of the two of them at this year's Anzac Day dawn service at Coatesville. "He was just such a good man," Mitchell said.

The tribute that said the most came from his son. Under the All Blacks' own post, Trey Cadwallader wrote that his father was the best All Black never to wear the jersey.

The week ahead

The team has not said how it will mark his death at Murrayfield, where the All Blacks play Scotland at 3.10am on Sunday New Zealand time. Rennie said only that the team would honour him.

RUGBE extends its sympathy to the Cadwallader family, to his friends at North Shore, and to everyone in the All Blacks who travelled with him.
