Marlborough Boys' College First XV 2026: Falcons take on a brand-new frontier

For the Marlborough Boys' College First XV, 2026 was always going to be a season like no other. As the Marlborough App reported in April, the Blenheim side, known as the Falcons, are lining up in two competitions at once this year: the familiar nine-team Miles Toyota Championship, and a brand-new 11-team South Island Boys' Colleges (SIBC) competition that pulls in the leading Crusaders-region colleges alongside King's High, Otago Boys' High and Southland Boys' High. Points from the SIBC matches count towards both tables, so every game carries double weight.

The challenge doesn't stop at the fixture list. With their front field closed for the year for drainage and resurfacing work, the Falcons, coached by Tonga Taumoefolau, have taken their 2026 campaign on the road. It is a big ask for any group of teenagers, and one this squad has met with plenty of front-foot spirit.

The early signs were promising. In a pre-season hit-out in Nelson, MBC edged Auckland's Liston College 24-19, sealing it with a late try. The step up to the new competition proved a tougher test: the Falcons opened their SIBC account in Geraldine against a strong Southland Boys' High side and went down 33-59, a result the Marlborough App noted continued a demanding start to the season. Even in defeat, 33 points against quality opposition showed there is real attacking intent in this team.

One fixture never needs any hype. In mid-June the Falcons renewed their rivalry with Nelson College, a meeting so old it is often billed as New Zealand's oldest secondary-school rugby rivalry, first contested back in the 1890s. Reports from the region confirmed the two neighbours crossed the strait to do battle again in 2026, adding another chapter to more than a century of contests between the Tasman and Marlborough schools.

The Falcons reached the Miles Toyota semifinals in 2025 before falling to Christ's College, so this group knows what the business end of the season feels like. With the double campaign still unfolding as of mid-July, there is plenty of rugby, and plenty of opportunity, ahead for a side learning fast against some of the best schoolboy teams in the South Island.
