Sacred Heart College First XV 2026: a proud Auckland 1A side right in the mix

Every winter the Glen Innes college pulls on the navy-and-red and goes to work in one of the toughest schoolboy competitions in the country, and 2026 has been no different. As the mid-season break arrives, Sacred Heart College's First XV sit fourth in Auckland 1A, a fixture list away from a familiar goal: the playoffs.

The campaign so far

The Auckland Rugby match centre tells the story of a side that can score in bunches. Sacred Heart opened round three with a commanding 51-15 win over King's College, then produced their biggest scoreline of the year so far, a 57-10 result against De La Salle College in round six. On their day, this is an attacking group that takes its chances.

The draw has also served up its share of arm-wrestles. The season began with an 18-25 result against Kelston Boys' High, a reminder of just how deep the 1A field runs, with contenders stacked from top to bottom.

A heavyweight before the break

The headline fixture heading into the holidays was the round-nine trip to Auckland Grammar. In a genuine top-of-the-table clash, the hosts came away 45-36 winners to stay unbeaten, as the NZ Herald reported. Even in defeat there was plenty to like for Sacred Heart, who put 36 points on the competition front-runners and never let the game drift. No 8 Malakai Havealeta opened the scoring, per the Herald's wrap, in a contest that stayed live to the end.

Where they stand

According to the NZ Herald, Sacred Heart sit fourth on 34 points as the break begins, behind Auckland Grammar (43), Kelston Boys' High (42) and St Kentigern College (35). With the leading pack tightly bunched, a strong second half of the season could yet reshape the ladder.

Proud company

None of this comes as a surprise for a programme with real pedigree. Sacred Heart have been Auckland 1A ever-presents at the business end of the season for more than a decade, reaching three finals (2016, 2017 and 2023) and lifting the 1A title in 2023, the moment captured in our hero photo. That tradition, and the rivalries with the likes of Auckland Grammar and St Kentigern, is exactly what makes the run home worth watching.

What's ahead

With fixtures still to come after the break, fourth spot keeps Sacred Heart firmly in the playoff conversation. If the attacking sharpness from those big wins meets the fight they showed at Grammar, the Glen Innes side will fancy their chances of climbing.
