Seventeen tries each: Fineanganofo and Moorby rewrite the record books

Every young winger dreams of diving over in the corner. In 2026, two Hurricanes team-mates did it more often in one season than anyone in Super Rugby history, and they got there together.

Fehi Fineanganofo and Josh Moorby both finished the season with 17 tries, breaking the single-season try-scoring record. The competition''s official website reported that the old mark of 16 was shared by former Brumbies flyer Joe Roff, who set it way back in 1997, and ex-Hurricanes wing Ben Lam, who matched it in 2018.

The chase captured fans'' imaginations through the back half of the season. Fineanganofo drew level with the record on 16 May, scoring his 16th try in the Hurricanes'' 47-24 win over the Blues at Eden Park, a night when, as rugby.com.au''s Nathan Williamson reported, the whole backline was humming with halfback Ereatara Enari setting up three tries.

Then came the perfect finish. In the grand final win over the Chiefs on 20 June, RNZ reported that Fineanganofo broke the record with his 17th try of the season, and Moorby scored twice to join his mate on 17. Two wingers, one record, shared, a pretty special way to sum up a team-first season.

Writing for Pacific Media Network, Christine Rovoi highlighted what the achievement meant for Pasifika rugby, noting Fineanganofo''s Tongan heritage and the big roles played by team-mates like Asafo Aumua, Peter Lakai, Devan Flanders and Jone Rova in the title run.

The records did not stop out wide, either. The season''s statistics show first five-eighth Ruben Love topped the points table with 138, and the Hurricanes topped the regular-season standings with 11 wins from 14 games before storming through the playoffs.

There is a lovely lesson in all of this for kids running out for their clubs this winter. Neither winger got there alone: every one of those 34 tries came at the end of passes, rucks and clean-outs from 14 team-mates. Records are brilliant fun, but as Fineanganofo and Moorby showed all season, they are built on teamwork, turning up every week and chasing every ball. Roff''s record stood for 29 years. Somewhere out there, a kid at grassroots level is already dreaming of chasing down 17.
