St Pat's Town and Silverstream hit form as the traditional Town v Stream clash looms

Wellington's Tranzit Coachlines Premiership has hit the boil in the middle of the 2026 season, and the two St Patrick's colleges are right in the thick of it, with their famous annual meeting now on the horizon. The St Pat's Silverstream rugby club has confirmed that Silverstream will host St Pat's Town on Wednesday 22 July, kicking off at 1.30pm.

Both schools warmed up for the occasion in style. ClubRugby.nz's Adam Julian reported that St Pat's Town beat Wairarapa College 45-23 at Hataitai Park in a midweek Premiership catch-up game. It was tight at the break, 26-23, before Town's pack took charge, forwards scored six of the side's seven tries, with Xavier Ikin-Manulevu, Donnie McNamara-Taele, Maka Vaihola, Anesi Taliau, Ralph Mettrick and Olu Siohane-Hune all crossing, and Gia Johnston adding a try and five conversions. The result made it three wins on the trot for Town, who ClubRugby.nz noted are tracking third after pushing competition leaders Wellington College to 31-26 earlier in the season.

Silverstream, the defending champions, produced a statement of their own. After their first Premiership defeat in 21 games, a 26-17 loss to Wellington College in the 95th Ken Gray Cup match, settled when Joe Barry's late conversion from the corner flag "kissed the timber three-quarters of the way up" and dropped over, as Adam Julian memorably described it, Stream responded with a record 109-0 win over Rongotai College. ClubRugby.nz reported 16 tries shared among a dozen scorers, a hat-trick for captain Ryder Thompson, and a piece of school history for first five-eighth Fletcher Cooper, whose 27-point haul (11 conversions and a try) edged past the 24-point record John Leslie had held since 1988.

All of which sets up the traditional Town v Stream fixture beautifully. It is one of the great days on the Wellington school rugby calendar: two schools that share a name, a founding story and a fierce, warm-hearted rivalry, with busloads of students, families and old boys expected at Silverstream for the 1.30pm kick-off.

Town arrive with a rumbling forward pack and momentum; Silverstream bring a champion's pedigree and a point to prove. Whatever the scoreboard says on 22 July, the winner will be Wellington school rugby, but nobody at either school would dare say that out loud before kick-off.
