There is a familiar black jersey feel to the All Blacks' new coaching box, and fans have plenty to be excited about. Head coach Dave Rennie has confirmed a rebuilt group of assistants, and the headline is the return of one of the country's most loved rugby figures.
As Planet Rugby reported, Rennie named a four-man assistant group: Neil Barnes as senior assistant, Tana Umaga on defence, Mike Blair running the attack and Jason Ryan retained in charge of the forwards. It is a mix of trusted hands and fresh voices heading into the next chapter.
The standout is Umaga. The All Blacks confirmed that the former captain, who earned 74 test caps in the black jersey, will take on the defence portfolio once Moana Pasifika's season wraps up. Few players have worn the fern with more mana, and now he brings that same presence to the coaching side.
Umaga sounded genuinely thrilled to be back in the fold. He told the All Blacks it was special "to have a role with the All Blacks again is pretty big."
Rennie was upbeat about the calibre of people around him. "This is a very experienced and highly skilled coaching team," he said, as Planet Rugby noted. Jason Ryan keeping the forwards means continuity up front, while Barnes brings lineout know-how and Blair adds an attacking spark.
The reshuffle also extends off the field. As the All Blacks announced, Phil Healey has been appointed head of performance, rounding out a support team built to get the best out of the squad.
With new appointments come farewells. Planet Rugby reported that Scott Hansen, Tamati Ellison and Bryn Evans have departed their coaching roles. There is good news in that change too, with the All Blacks confirming Ellison steps up as Maori All Blacks head coach, a great next step for a respected coach.
For supporters, it all adds up to a coaching team blending experience, fresh ideas and a whole lot of heart. Seeing Umaga back in an All Blacks setup is a moment plenty of Kiwis have been waiting for, and there is real optimism about what this group can build together.
