Tauranga Boys' College First XV 2026: the anchor holds through a fierce Super 8

Tauranga Boys' College arrived in 2026 with a target on their backs. As the 2024 Super 8 champions, the Bay of Plenty school knew every side in the country's toughest schoolboy competition would lift for a shot at the reigning kings. That is exactly how the season so far has unfolded, and there is plenty for the Titans faithful to be proud of.

A campaign in the deep end

The Super 8 gathers eight of the strongest rugby schools in the country, and in 2026 the table has been remarkably tight. Tauranga's mid-season stretch put them straight up against the pace-setters. In Round 3 they travelled to Hawke's Bay, where a fast-starting Napier Boys' High side won 40-17, NZ Herald's Hawke's Bay Today reported, with Napier storming to a 14-0 lead inside 12 minutes on their way to the top of the ladder.

A one-point epic

The following round produced the campaign's most gripping chapter. Away to Palmerston North Boys' High, Tauranga went down 26-25 in a one-point thriller, according to NZ Herald's First XV wrap. Right wing Nathan Theron was superb, contributing 20 points through two tries, two conversions and two penalties, while fullback Tommy McQuoid crossed for a converted try in the 70th minute to drag his side back into contention right to the final whistle. Losing by the width of a post stings, but a young team that keeps fighting to the last play is a team worth watching.

Where things stand

By the end of June, the same NZ Herald wrap had Tauranga chasing their first win of the round-robin with the top five schools separated by just five points. In a competition this bunched, results have swung on a single moment, and the Titans have been in the arm-wrestle every week. A strong finish could still reshape the whole ladder.

With clashes against the competition's front-runners still to come, there is everything to play for in the run home. This is a proud programme that lives up to its name, the anchor, and a season measured by more than the scoreboard: courage, resilience and the character of a group learning fast against the very best.
