Whangārei Boys' High School First XV carry Northland pride into North Harbour 1A

There is something to admire about a team that goes looking for the hardest possible test. Whangārei Boys' High School, in blue and white in Whangārei, Northland, are one of the few sides who leave their own region every week to play in the North Harbour 1A First XV competition, taking on the North Shore and Auckland schools on their own patch. It is a big ask, and the boys keep fronting up.

The NZ Herald's 2026 season preview rated Whangārei among the top handful of contenders in North Harbour 1A alongside Westlake, Rosmini and Rangitoto. That is fitting company for a school that finished last season as North Harbour runners-up, claimed the Northland regional title and won the national secondary schools Condor Sevens.

The 2026 campaign opened away against defending champions Westlake Boys' High, a 40-5 result to the hosts, with Whangārei scoring their try inside the opening quarter. It was a stern welcome back to the top grade, and a reminder of the standard the team has set itself.

The best of it so far came at home. On 16 May the First XV hosted Rangitoto College at Semenoff Stadium, Okara Park, the home of Northland Rugby, and edged it 21-19 in front of their own crowd. Two points, a Northland ground, a rival from the big smoke sent home just short. Those are the afternoons players remember for a long time.

The attacking spark has kept coming. In a 31-5 away win over Massey High School, Whangārei's centre did the heavy lifting with two tries and three conversions, the kind of all-round game that lifts a whole backline.

Week to week the travel and the calibre of opposition make North Harbour 1A a proper education. Every carry into a well-drilled Auckland pack, every away trip down State Highway 1, is time in the fire for these young Northlanders. For a region that loves its rugby, having a school side measuring itself against the best each Saturday is something to get behind.

What do you reckon Northland fans should be most proud of this season? Get along to a game if you can, and follow the school through the official Whangārei Boys' High School channels.
