St Patrick's College Silverstream First XV 2026: back-to-back champs chase a hat-trick
A positive look at how the Wellington powerhouse have gone so far in 2026 - a record romp, a rare loss, and a big derby ahead.
Sunday, 19 July 2026

St Patrick's College Silverstream arrived at the 2026 season as one of the names to beat in Wellington schoolboy rugby, and the campaign so far has had just about everything: a record-breaking scoreline, a rare setback, and a traditional derby still to come.
Reigning champions, and a long unbeaten run
The Upper Hutt school are the back-to-back Wellington Premiership champions, and ClubRugby.nz notes they have made every Premiership final since 2017, winning 91 of 102 games across that stretch. That pedigree is exactly why every rival marks the Stream fixture in red on the calendar.
A classic derby, decided at the death
Silverstream's long Premiership winning streak - 21 games - came to an end in the 95th annual Ken Gray Cup meeting with Wellington College, played in dry conditions at Stream. As ClubRugby.nz reported, Wellington College edged it 26-17, leading 15-14 at the break before two second-half penalties settled a tight one. Winger Troy Waldrom crossed for Silverstream and first-five Fletcher Cooper kept the scoreboard ticking, while captain Ryder Thompson was named among the best of the Stream forwards. It was the kind of contest that shows why this rivalry is one of the best in the country.
A record response
The champions answered in emphatic fashion. In their next midweek outing, ClubRugby.nz reported Silverstream ran in a school-record 109-0 result, with 16 tries shared around a dozen scorers. Thompson grabbed a hat-trick and Cooper piled on 27 points, said to be a new individual points mark for the school. It was a reminder of the attacking depth this squad carries.
Where the season sits
With the 2026 Tranzit Coachlines Premiership building towards its August final, College Sport Wellington and ClubRugby both have Silverstream and Wellington College among the sides most likely to feature at the business end - though the competition is deepening, with Paraparaumu College qualifying for the Premiership for the first time since 1989.
What's ahead
The next big date is the traditional Town v Stream clash, with St Patrick's College Town heading to Silverstream on Wednesday 22 July. RUGBE previewed the form of both St Pat's sides ahead of that fixture last month - it is one of Wellington's oldest and most-loved school rugby occasions, and this year's edition is shaping as another good one.
